Breaking the Glass Frame: Women and Animation, Past, Present, Future is an international research network that brings together scholars, educators, historians, practitioners, industry personnel, curators, programmers and viewers to explore and celebrate women’s historical and contemporary contribution to commercial and independent animation and academia.


The network’s Los Angeles Symposium will take place on October 6th and 7th, 2018, at the University of Southern California, close to many of the major U.S. animation studios, and is hosted in partnership with the UCLA Animation Workshop, CalArts Animation, and Women in Animation. Confirmed keynote speakers include Brenda Chapman (director, Brave and The Prince of Egypt) and Producer and Creative Director Brown Johnson (Sesame Workshop, Nickelodeon). In addition, the symposium will include paper presentations, panels, screenings, a career workshop, and networking opportunities. Topics to be addressed include diversity and inclusion; mentorship and advocacy in commercial and academic settings; sexual harassment and gender inequality; strategies for positive change; women in cutting-edge technologies and the history of women in animation.


Further network symposia are planned for London (in partnership with the University of Surrey and Brunel University) and Montreal (in partnership with Concordia and McGill) in 2019.


Call For Papers:

Proposals are sought for 20-minute research papers exploring the history of women in animation and the relationship between the historical perspective and the contemporary context. We are particularly interested in papers focusing on the US context. Potential paper topics include, but aren’t limited to:

  • The history of women in animation (including case studies of specific animators or contexts)
  • Doing historical research into women in animation (e.g. availability of and access to archives; unwritten and hidden histories, etc)
  • Analyses of the research, scholarship and material that is currently available (i.e. published) on the history of women in animation and female animators
  • The relationship between the history of women in animation and the contemporary context for female animators.
  • Examinations and critiques of the concept of gendered aesthetics and style
  • Case studies of contemporary female animators
  • Industry studies perspectives on the contemporary film and media industries and female animators
  • The process of doing research into the contemporary industry or contemporary female animators
  • Presentations from current (or past) practitioners who take any of the above analytical perspectives on their own work/ practice.

(Note, that we are open to interpreting the terms ‘animator’ and ‘animation’ broadly to include things such as V/FX, etc)
